By Melissa Baker

It is in rare cases that an ailment is discovered before advancing to complex stages and this is the main cause as to my many diseases become untreatable as they have already advanced to very dangerous stages. In this matter then it is advisable that one does early evaluation on health. In adults, Dysphagia Evaluation plays a very vital role in helping to discover some of the life-threatening ailments.

At one point in our lives, we have all somehow experienced trouble when swallowing but this should not be confused with dysphagia. Dysphagia is the uncomfortable feeling one gets when swallowing food and liquid and can be accompanied by pain causing more time to be taken for food to reach the stomach from the mouth.

Dysphagia is a condition that can attack anyone at any particular age but it is a condition most common in older adults. It has different causes as to why it develops and can attack different systems of the swallowing process. At times a root cause of disorder cannot be established but there are different categories of disorder that attack different parts.

Oesophagal disorder is the most common whereby one will get the feeling that food is stuck on your throat or is getting hung up in your chest after you have started swallowing. A common cause of this disorder is achalasia. This is a condition where the sphincter refuses to relax properly to help food down your throat with ease causing food to go back up.

Due to the inability of the food to reach the belly well, regurgitation will occur. This is the involuntary coming back of food from the stomach back to the throat and even in the mouth. It happens without having vomiting induced and due to the belly acids coming back up and soaring the throats then wounds can form on the walls of the oesophagus.

Due to these episodes of regurgitation causing food and acids to climb back up to your throat, one can frequently experience very painful heartburns and these can even lead to development of ulcers on the stomach walls and the acids repeatedly burn your throat then it is most likely that one will develop a hoarse voice and extreme dehydration occurs to patients suffering from dysphagia.

Another common system is that one can often start drooling without even realizing it and this means that one is having trouble swallowing saliva and hence the excess amounts are being let out by drooling. This is then followed by poor oral management hence speech can become slurred. As a result, one will have a wet gurgle filled speech that will be beyond their control.

Dysphagia should be seen as a rare opportunity to visit your doctor for a thorough checkup to be conducted as this can help to diagnose if there is a growing sickness that can be tamed before hitting critical stages that if waited upon will create a lot of difficulties and problems that would have been otherwise been avoided.
